The Scopes trial has long been interpreted through claims about science and religion individual rights liberties. This article recovers a different debate the trial's political history that emerged in later 1920s resonated down twentieth century. Here figured as fraught national circus, which raised difficult questions relationship between media spectacle cultural conflict United States. circus dynamics intensified conflicts it staged without ever actually resolving them; this trap was then perceived negotiated ways by contemporary liberals, conservatives, socialists, far-right activists.
